Defining Cellulite and its causes
Cellulite treatment is normally what most people concentrate on without comprehending first what cellulite is. It is a condition that affects the appearance of the skin in areas with underlying fat deposits for instance the thighs, causing it to get a dimpled, lumpy appearance. The fat is not responsible for the cellulite and a good justification for this is that it is responsible for the smooth, plump cheeks in children.
However cellulite is different from ‘normal fat’ in that the structure of the overlying skin and underlying connective tissue determines if it will be smooth or rippled which plays a big role in attempts to get rid of cellulite.
Underneath the skin there is a layer of fibrous connective tissue responsible for adhering skin to the muscle beneath it. In men this connective tissue is arranged in a cross-hatched or diagonal manner giving a smooth and continuous pattern, where as in women it runs vertically perpendicularly to the skin. These fibrous bands called septae tether the skin to the underlying tissue at certain points creating fat chambers that push up on the skin while the bands pull the skin downward making cellulite treatment close to impossible.
This is what causes cellulite in women and because of the difference in connective tissue arrangement in men and also the fact that their skin is thicker than that of women they are less susceptible to cellulite.
Cellulite and exercise are something that many people with cellulite should consider as cycles of weight gain and weight loss compromise skin elasticity making cellulite more pronounced. Another method that can be used as cellulite treatment is living a healthy lifestyle. This entails being well hydrated, not smoking and eating a balanced diet.
Wearing looser fitting under garments can also be used as a cellulite treatment as it is claimed that cellulite can be caused by tight elastic which impedes proper circulation in the body. There is also the option of surgery as a way to get rid of cellulite; liposuction is a procedure that entails removal of excess fat from the body and is used to try and remove cellulite but there is no evidence that it is an effective procedure for cellulite treatment.
The above are not cellulite treatments they are just measures to improve the appearance of cellulite. Proper diet and exercise decrease the layer of fat underneath the skin and also keep the skin and connective tissue stronger, healthier and suppler.
Proper hydration is also not a cellulite treatment but can be termed as a form of cellulite therapy as it helps to prevent water retention by the skin. As for exercise and cellulite it helps to keep the body fat levels low and improves circulation and muscle tone in cellulite prone areas. This improved circulation helps with elimination of excess waste and excess fluid retention.
A logical explanation for why there is medically no cellulite treatment is because its presence and severity are in large part determined by hormones and heredity. Therefore there can be no cure for one’s genetic makeup but a few cellulite treatment methods are said to improve the appearance of cellulite.
